In a dramatic "infiltration" to mark the 12th
grievous anniversary of the opening of Guantanamo, 150 activists occupied the
Smithsonian National Museum of American History in two separate actions to
speak out against torture and demand the prison be closed and thus
"relegated to a museum - to be shuttered and condemned, but also
understood as an example of where fear, hatred and violence can take us.” In
the action, which was organized by Witness Against Torture and followed a rally
at the White House, protesters revised the museum’s “Price of Freedom” exhibit
to include twelve years of torture and indefinite detention. Cool video of
hundreds of tourists watching, listening, learning. Interestingly, security
officials took down banners but negotiated with protesters and declined to make
any arrests.
