News in English: MLC election results in Bihar, UP puncture Modi wave balloon

Bihar Legislative Assembly
The result of recent elections for Legislative Council seats in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were ignored by mainstream as well as off-stream media. It got almost negligible attention even in comparison to the result of recent student union election in Gujarat where NSUI’s performance mocked down all the speculations. It was difficult to believe how NSUI managed to win three out of four seats in the state of Gujarat from where, it is said, an anti-Congress wave has started and being managed very successfully. Similarly it’s again difficult to believe how come BJP performed worst in the recent Legislative Council election in the cow belt of India. BJP has been claiming that at least in these two states (Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) it will sweep the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.

On 23 March 2014, Bihar and UP went through the election for eight and eleven seats of Legislative Council respectively. The counting of votes started on 27 March and continued till 28 March. The result was shocking for all those who had kept close eyes on the entire election process.

In Bihar, out of eight seats BJP managed to win only two seats. Naval Kishor Yadav who won the Patna Teacher seat was an RJD rebel who had left Lalu Prasad’s party recently and joined BJP. It should also be noted that he is from Yadav community which has strong resentment towards both BJP and JD(U), the two parties which get most of the upper caste’s supports. The other seat that BJP won is Tirhut graduate seat. The winner was also a member of JD (U) but fought the election on BJP ticket because his party had denied him ticket.

The Patna graduate seat went to the sitting Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Neeraj Kumar of JD(U) with remarkable lead. Kumar, till the declaration of the result, was suspicious of his win as he feared ‘Modi’s wave’ in the state could crush him down. But finally he won the election with bigger margin than what he got in his last election.

Quite similar is the case with Uttar Pradesh where BJP managed to save both Graduate and Teacher seat in Varanasi but with lesser margin than what they got in the last election. BJP’s candidates lost both seats of Lucknow where they were pushed to third position in Graduate seat.

It should also be pointed out that only graduates have voting right for the election of Graduate seat of MLC and only teachers who must also be highly educated persons, have the voting right in election of Teacher seat of MLC. It is well established fact that majority of graduates in the caste driven India still comes from the upper caste communities. It is this upper caste vote bank on which the Hindutva forces claim to have monopoly. BJP has always projected itself as the party of Brahmins, Kashtriya and Baniya. But when most of the graduates and well-educated people come from these three communities, how can BJP lose MLC election in an environment of anti-Congress, pro-Modi wave?

These MLC election results establish the fact that ‘Modi wave’ is not representing Brahmins or Kashtriya, but instead it is representing business community and business houses who have monopoly on the economy of this country. That is why in a recent survey by Economic Times, 74 per cent of the topmost capitalist or business houses of this country has preferred Narendra Modi as their preferred prime ministerial candidate. It is the symbols of this business houses such as Bombay Stock exchange, NIFTY etc which have been performing bull dances on each and every exit polls, showing BJP emerging as single largest party in the forthcoming election.

Modi projects himself as the champion of the causes of Hindus but a recent report by Jagriti Natya Manch on Gujarat’s Model of Development, which is based on data from NSSO, RBI, CAG, WTO, Socio-Economic Review of Gujarat, Sachar Committee, Planning Commission etc shows how Parsis and Christians have been much ahead of even Hindus in terms of taking benefits from Government resources in Modi’s ruled Gujarat.

The highest gainer in terms of proportion of self-employment during Modi’s rule are non-Hindu and non-Muslims while their contribution in rural labour decreased with similar pace as self-employment increased.

The highest proportion of population possessing land above 4 hectares is neither among Hindus nor Muslims. The proportion of non-Muslim and non-Hindu landholding above 4 hectare is almost double both Hindus and Muslims.

The entire ‘wave’ and aura, created so impressively as if only formality of taking oath is left for Narendra Modi as prime minister of India, has been constructed by the business community of this country. They are systematically projecting Modi as India’s future prime minister with hidden dangerous agenda. They know that it is only Modi who can throw tribals out of the lands that are full of coal and minerals. They know that it is only Modi’s model of development which can ensure them encroachment over the lands of poor and helpless peasants of this country. They know that no one other than Mr. Modi can ensure them loan of five times than the calculated total cost of the project and that also at 0.1 per cent rate of interest. And that is why they are pumping huge money on artificial image creation of Mr. Modi as the only savior for India of 21st century.
